Is Life Getting The Best Of You?

Replace someone with life and there’s a big question. Is life getting the best of you? More over are you getting the best from and giving your best to, life?

‘Were you born to resist or be abused?’

Do you feel like you seem to be resisting what feels right, living at odds with yourself and being abused by life? Sometimes it can feel like we are victims of our ‘modern’ society and that life happens to us and not for us.

‘Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must

A lot of people feel disillusioned and disenfranchised. Maybe it’s time to do something drastically different. Maybe it’s time to be honest and real and say you’re tired of it and don’t want to continue like this.

‘I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse’

Maybe it’s time to stop feeling like life is kicking you around, you just start to get ahead and get pulled back down or feel like you’re only slightly ahead in life if you stop what you’re doing you’ll be caught up. Maybe it’s time to stand up and take control so that even if you are standing still you can still be getting ahead in life.

Who’s looking to make some changes to the life and circumstances in 2017, start taking some control and running their own life instead of reacting to life.

I Choose Daily

Everyday we are faced with countless choices and decisions. Life is not about what happens to us. Life is about how we choose to react to what happens to us. These choices will determine the outcome of our lives.

If you could choose, would you rather be rich or poor? What was the first subject that came into your head? I’m guessing finances and I’m going to guess you said rich. What if the question was referring to your mindset? Which would you choose then? What if I told you that both are related i.e. your mindset is directly related to your finances. Poor mindset = poor finances. Rich mindset = rich finances. Therefore if you want to improve your finances you must improve your mindset.

How do we do that? By the choices we make. Have you ever heard the term the poor stay poor while the rich get richer. Let’s look at why

Poor choose to

  • Believe life happens to them (victim mentality)
  • accept little to no responsibility
  • Think small and think of limitations
  • ‘Wish and hope’
  • Overthink obstacles

Whereas the rich

  • Have the ‘I create my life’ mentality (winning mentality)
  • Accept full responsibility
  • Think big, think possibilities, dream a lot
  • Plan and take action
  • Focus on opportunities

Don’t forget you can be rich and not yet wealthy. You can have a rich mindset but not the finances to match. In this case the finances will come but for the poor person they won’t until they change their thinking.

So how do we change that? By choosing not to accept those limiting thoughts. But we can’t just all of sudden change our thoughts without putting some new information in our brain. You see those ‘poor’ mentalities are a result of our conditioning and input up to now. So now we must change the input.

You must choose to invest in education first. The most important asset is our mind. You have the choice of what you put in there. In order to earn, first we must learn.

So what can you do? Get books from the library, get audiobooks to listen to on your commute. Write down new thoughts that challenge and inspire you because then it will become ingrained in your brain.

This may be difficult at first because it will change your old way of thinking but it will be worth it in the end. You must be humble enough to read and listen to what the authors have to say. It can be easy to defend when a new idea clashes with the way you think. Listening can be far better than talking, that is why we have 2 ears and 1 mouth. Too many people are too quick to argue rather than listening to absorb new ideas and possibilities. They argue instead of asking questions.

So here are some of the things ‘I Choose Daily’

  1. I choose to exercise

Most of the world’s most successful people have a daily exercise routine. There is a correlation between breaking down barriers in fitness to breaking down barriers in life. You will have lower stress levels, higher concentration levels and a better work rate as a result of improved fitness.

  1.  I choose to read and learn

All entrepreneurs and successful people are lifelong learners. They never claim to know everything. Driven people aren’t that way automatically they choose to self-educate and constantly grow. They are determined to always learn new skills and keep developing as a person. I choose what I decide to read and just as importantly I choose what not to read. For example I don’t read newspapers because they propagate the cycle of negativity and despair in the world designed to keep us stuck in our poor mentality cycle. Instead I choose to read about successful people who have been through it, that I can learn from and build on developing my rich mentality.

  1.  I choose who I listen to.

No matter what you do in life people will have an opinion on it. Be careful whose opinion you choose to listen to and examine what is there life situation. Have they achieved the results that you are after? Have they got the lifestyle you desire? Or are they simply giving their opinion with no knowledge of having tried it? Find the top mentors and coaches in your industry, those that have achieved what you are after, learn from them and model them. You want to be learning from industry leaders, not those without experience. If you have people in your life who’d like to offer their opinion and their advice and they’ve never actually done it themselves, stop listening to them.

So what are you going to choose?

Life is a never ending cycle of decisions

We all struggle with making decisions at some stage. Why is that? Are we afraid of losing everything that we have or that we have worked for? The truth is, that decision has been put to you because now there is something else that you wish to achieve or that the Universe has in store for you.

The decision itself is only the beginning. Is it the decision itself or its possible outcomes that worries you or rather what you perceive you are putting on the line if you go for it but on the other hand think of what you will attain as a result of the decision. Which of these is more desirable?

The fear of loss is greater than the desire for gain. – Zig Ziglar.

When you make a decision you are jumping into a strong current that will take you to places you may never have dreamed of when you made the decision. We try so hard to hold onto things, to keep things the same, normal, or routine. The trouble then is that we can’t cope when something unforeseen comes up and so we get this anxiety or analysis paralysis.

We must release our desire to lock things down, to control things and go with the ebbs and flows of life. If we fail to make a decision or avoid anything which upsets our status quo we are hindering our growth and progress and if we are not growing we are dying (inside) a little everyday until life, hopes and dreams have been sucked out of us and we are left cynical and jaded.

When you do make a decision you will find freedom in the action, you are released of the anguish and the struggle of it, and there is no going back. The only thing then is to focus on the best way of moving forward. There will be obstacles along the way and you may have to make detours but always ensure you are moving forward toward the same destination.

So if you are struggling to make a decision, don’t think of it as the end, think of it in terms of the possibilities it holds and who knows where it may lead.

When you want something with all your heart you are closest to the soul of the World. – Paulo Coehlo, The Alchemist.

Is ‘What do you do?’ the worst question?

Hands up if you cringe a little on the inside when you get asked this question.

Sometimes I will ask people off the bat ‘what are your interests? Passions? What do you want to get out of life?’ and so many times I will get a perplexed look back in return.

Why is it that the most common question to ask when people first meet someone new ‘What do you do?’
Does that enable us to get a better understanding of the person, to prejudge them, put them in a box and say okay, that’s where you go, I can handle you or know how to deal with you now?

What a person does can often have very little to do with who they are.

My thought is that the perplexed look is because people are not used to getting asked that question. They know how to respond to ‘what do you do’ because it’s tangible to a degree.

However, what interests you and what are you passionate about are not. It is a feeling, an emotion that sometimes can’t be explained or quantified but just watch the difference in the person when talking about it a topic that they actually love, their mood, tonality and energy all go up and they could talk for hours.

So if you want to have better conversations with people and to connect more, just ask better questions and see how things change.

Live an Authentic and Extraordinary Life

Are you living an authentic and extraordinary life? In service of something greater than yourself?

Be bold, be adventurous, live life on your terms, be uncompromising and authentic. Devote yourself to something with everything that you have, work super hard, believe in yourself, stick to what you believe in, refuse to compromise, move forward in face of all obstacles, have faith, have the courage to be bold and to make a statement, to stand tall and say this who I am.

The comfort zone is not your friend – Robin Arzon.

To truly be happy and satisfied with life we must help others, serve our fellow man. That is the key.

It is easy to keep doing what you are doing, the rut is easy. Change, improvement, growth; those things are difficult but they are the purpose of life.

We have developed into a world where it has become socially acceptable to do what your told, to shut up, to be a good consumer, go to the mall, drive your car, buy stuff, go to the movies, play video games, eat fast food, anything that will numb you from doing the inside work of finding out what makes you the only you there is.

Investing in your intuition, blazing your own path, these things are daunting. It might be the hardest thing you can imagine doing, like a salmon swimming upstream or setting sail in a stormy sea with a canoe without a paddle.

But it can be the opposite of daunting and difficult. If we perceive it as less about struggle and more about letting go, like a shedding of an old skin, less about fighting but more about surrender, a falling into who you really are. That is what faith is all about, being comfortable that the perilous canoe will carry you in the current of your true life purpose and when the sea settles you find yourself no longer struggling but riding a current effortlessly with your name on it, your personal life purpose. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up, but can be the path to victory. Releasing rather than holding on is the way to become more fully expressed and incredibly powerful.

Adapted from Rich Roll.

Action = Results

There is no ‘Get rich quick’, ‘rapid weight loss’ or ‘overnight success’. Nothing will happen without action.

We live in a World where people want immediate results and gratification; results without the work. People want shortcuts and wishful thinking and are unwilling to admit that success won’t happen by itself.

The self-improvement industry, for example is worth $12 billion a year. People are buying books, listening to audios, attending seminars by the bucket load and it’s getting them nowhere.

Why? Because their not looking for the ‘secrets’ to success. Their looking for the ‘shortcuts’ to success.

They want to get rich with no risks and no money down; they want to lose weight without diet and exercise.

But then the weeks pass and nothing happens. The high wears off and they come back to Earth. Each year the cycle repeats and they’re no better off and perhaps in a worse state than before.

The required step is taking action. Action = Results. Nothing happens without action

There are millions of things out there that will never be realised, that could have improved mankind, brought joy and wonder into people’s lives but never will because no action was taken.

Nothing you do in life will amount to anything unless you take action. Only action can turn your goals into a reality.

Taking action is hard! It’s like Alice in Wonderland when she is really tall and there is this tiny door she can’t fit through. Most people can’t even see the door and those who do may only stare at it.

That is why you must have desire. Without desire you won’t put enough effort into pursuing your goal.

In order to take action you must have clarity, desire, belief and knowledge. And if you still hesitate there is only one reason left. Fear! But more on that another time.

Adapted from ‘Life in Half a Second’ by Matthew Michalewicz

Discovering Your Purpose

What is your dream? Your goal? Your mission?

It is that thing that monopolises your thoughts while you sleep, when you wake up, on the train home, between sets at the gym, when you can think of nothing else, that’s it!

If you are struggling to discover it then think of what do you know but more importantly what do you enjoy? Do what you love and find a way to make money from it.

Once you’ve found it write it down and then map out the milestones to achieve it.

But even then it won’t be easy, there are going to be endless questions, doubts and reasons not to do it. But your dream is not going to go away, it will keep annoying you, nagging at you until you give it the attention it deserves.

Your desire must be like fire in your veins and once you commit there is no turning back. Investing in yourself and backing yourself is the greatest investment and the scariest decision you will ever make.

Things will get hard, and you may want to quit, that is why your desire must be strong. So strong that it won’t let you quit. You must keep going against the fear, keep working through the tasks, crossing off the milestones and telling people about what you’re up to.

You must visualise success before it appears; see yourself doing it, making sales, calendar full, money coming in, whatever success looks like, visualise it.

Spend time with people who have done what you want to do, learn what you need to make it work. The knowledge will empower you, answer questions and remove doubt.

Then before you know it you will be there realising your dream and living it. You will realise all the stress, doubt and worry had been worth it.

Then you will start to think what else can I do? You will find yourself moving from goal to goal.

With each success comes a greater, more ambitious goal – Casey Niestat.

Do not fear failure

Do not fear failure be afraid of not trying. Show me someone that says they have never failed and I will show you a person that has never tried.

Failure is not to be feared. What you should fear is not trying. It you are failing then you are trying. You have a greater goal in mind that you are working on. The biggest factor is that you don’t stop.

We live in a world where it seems that perfection is the only option, it is not. Success is not pretty. Success is not clean and polished. Success is hard work, grind, sometimes struggle but it is so so worth it and is far better than residing to the status quo. Those that follow the crowd, will often get no further than the crowd, unless you upgrade the crowd you follow that is going where you want to go.

Anyone that is successful has been a failure many times. What made them successful was the fact that they never gave up.

Albert einstein at 4 years old was told by his teachers that he would never amount to much

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.

At 30, Oprah Winfrey was ‘between jobs.’

And look at how they turned out. Too many people give up at the first failure, the first bump in the road, the first sign of difficulty. If you did that you would never get anywhere. When it becomes hard, when life throws stuff at you, you’ve got to be able to say ‘IS THAT ALL YOU’VE GOT!’ Go at it with a tenacity like no other.

Let the fire inside burn greater than the fire around you.

So if you have a plan, a dream, a goal or a vision for yourself. Do not give up on it like so many others do. The road to success is not a straight line, it is up and down, sideways, sometime loop-the-loops but as long as you are moving forward that is what counts.

Do not say that after a day at work that you don’t have time to work on your dreams. Don’t sit in front of the television and numb yourself from the drive and the desire that is within. Don’t succumb to the rubbish that is touted to us in the media to keep us distracted from the truths and your true calling.

If it means enough to you, you will find a way. If not, then you will find an excuse – Jim Rohn.

So what’s it going to be?

This blog relates to an amazing TED talk by Brene Brown; The power of vulnerability
This is amazing TED talk could lead us all to live healthier, happier lives by being more truthful, honest and open with ourselves and others. In order to get into our heart and connect with people.

The thing that connects us all is our desire to be seen for who we are. We live in a world that can make it feel like we should be something that we are not. People are ruled by fear and shame. But ultimately what people crave is connection. But search for it in the wrong places and try to ‘fit in’ rather than being authentic and connecting.

We try to pursue or depict perfection in our lives but the reality could not be further from the truth. But we must embrace that and recognise it in each other in order to live in a more compassionate world. We must have the courage to embrace that vulnerability and for others to say ‘I see you’ and I feel you. Then we can start to connect with each other on a greater level and really make changes in the world.

And this all stems back to a very early age where we try to shield children from the harsh realities of the world and say you are perfect and I’m going to keep you perfect. Until they go out into the world for themselves and find things to be very different. Instead we must say ‘You are hardwired for struggle and none of us are perfect but you are worthy of love and belonging.’

Instead we numb ourselves in bad food, alcohol, medication and addiction. But that doesn’t make the bad stuff go away instead it manifests physically in the body i.e. stress, anxiety, depression, etc. But we also numb joy, happiness and gratitude. When all we are looking for is purpose and meaning.

Everyone is looking for purpose and meaning. Recognition and connection. And by recognition that isn’t necessarily in promotions but simply in ‘I see you, I see the talents that you have and want to help you make the best use of them.’ That is so rare to be wanted for exactly who you are rather than what you can bring to a job and get paid an hourly wage when really they may have so much more to give than that and so feel undervalued.

‘We must let ourselves be seen. For people to see that it is okay to be vulnerable. To love with our whole hearts even though there is no guarantee. To practice gratitude and joy especially in those moments where it seems most difficult. To feel that vulnerable means you are alive. And to feel like we are enough.

When we say that we stop screaming and start listening. We are kinder and gentler to the people around us and we are kinder and gentler to ourselves.’
