The Pursuit of Enhancement Podcast Episode 18
Welcome to Episode 18 of The Pursuit of Enhancement Podcast.
My name is Peter Ledwidge and I am your host.
Each week I sit down to talk in-depth with guests that push the boundaries of conventional living, driven by the singular pursuit of being on an unrelenting quest to continually expand the horizons of their body, mind and spirit.
The aim is to learn more about them and from them; their story, the work they are doing, the highs, the lows, the triumphs, the heartaches and everything in between.
The hope is that these conversations might spark something within you that gives you cause for self-reflection, inspires you to embark on your own journey of self-discovery or gives you the courage to take a chance and go after your goals.
This week I’m joined by clinical dietitian and phd researcher, Joel Craddock
As well as that he is an Ironman, a Father, vegan, an entrepreneur, an activist and the chief meme artist behind the highly popular instagram account veggie scapes.
As a clinical dietitian and Joel has worked in the NSW public health sector for many years. He has recently left to take the opportunity of a research PhD exploring vegetarian-based dietary behaviours in relation to physical activity.
This research aims to understand diet behaviour, motivations and supplementation use in people who follow vegetarian-based diets and engage in physical activity ranging from recreational to elite.
He has also recently started his own plant-based dietitian consultancy and takes clients in person or remotely.
Joel is the founder of clothing company TwoSix9; Ethical apparel, made predominately from wind & solar energy, organic cotton & ink and 10% of proceeds are donated to animal rescue sanctuaries.
He is also a father of 2, husband and recently competed in Ironman Cairns which we will get to in next week’s episode.
This week on the podcast we’ll talk about
- His journey to veganism
- His experience working in the public health system, the symptoms he is seeing and the limits of ‘conventional’ diet advice in improving the health of patients and helping them to achieve optimal health
- What he hopes to achieve from his phd studies, we talk in depth on the anecdotal evidence of a vegan diet being having a positive effect on sports performance and how Joel’s aim is to add the scientific evidence to the discussion, so if you’re a sport fan you’ll enjoy this part
- We also discuss the difference between being whole foods plant based and vegan, which can cause some confusion, and what made the difference for him to take the ethical standpoint of going vegan vs just adopting a whole foods plant based diet for his health
- His apparel brand twosix9, the story behind it, the aim and details of how it is produced
